๐ MYT Monday #003 - Adaptability
Oct 19, 2020To state the obvious, things are pretty wild right now...and they might be for a while yet.
Much like a tsunami, there seems to be wave after wave of challenges...and the waves only seem to get higher and more frequent.
It can be overwhelming. We can feel lost, and out of control...all at sea, if you will.
The truth of the matter is we are not in control...and we never have been.
When training people to survive rip currents, life guards teach us to stay calm, and don't fight the current as our best way to survive.
Remaining calm is the single biggest thing we can do for ourselves in life, and music right now too.
A calm, rational, objective approach will allow us to move with the currents, and adapt to our environment.
It'll also help us to focus only on the few things we can control, and take advantage opportunities we might not have otherwise noticed, had we given in to the frantic nature of the times.
Musically, this could mean a change of focus for a while...as Producers, there are many alternative ways we can monetise our skills.
It could be through using our Sound Design skills to create and sell sample packs, MIDI Files and Synth Presets.
It could mean sorting out our Publishing situation, to make sure we are making all the money we are entitled to from your music catalog.
It could mean embracing different styles of music too, with the aim of getting our music to Music Supervisors, who could get our tracks placed on TV, Film and Advertising.
These are just a few of the options, and there are more, which you'll reveal to yourself, if you simply have the will to lean into the uncertainty of the situation, and find out what could work for you.
If you do find yourself in a situation where you have to make a sideways step for a while, then that's ok too...remember, you are an Artist, no matter the situation.
The painting above, Hokusai's 'The Great Wave Off Kanagawa' has always reminded me of this...so much so I devoted my right arm to depicting it as a permanent reminder - no matter how rough the seas, we have to stay in our boats, and ride the waves to calmer seas...because, as with all things...this too shall pass.
This week, lean in to uncertainty in the studio, and explore new frontiers...you might just surprise yourself...
To your increasing Creative Flow,
Paul <3
